Sassnitz is a town on the Jasmund peninsula, Rügen Island, in the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The population in 2004 was 10,920. Sassnitz ferry port is located on the ilse of Ruegen, on the eastern side.
It is a well-known resort town, and is a gateway to the nearby Jasmund National Park. Sassnitz is home to Rügen's only zoo. The decommissioned British submarine HMS Otus was purchased by a German entrepreneur and towed to Sassnitz to be a floating museum.
Sassnitz is twinned with the following towns: Cuxhaven in Germany, Trelleborg in Sweden and Kingisepp in Russia.
